Is the Nintendo Switch 2 region locked?
Published 30 Aug 2026
No. Nintendo Switch 2 game cards are region free, so a cartridge bought in any country will play on any console. Digital purchases follow the region of the Nintendo Account you sign in with, not the hardware.
This is the question we are asked most in Egypt, usually by someone about to buy an imported console. The short answer is that the hardware does not care where it or the game came from.
Physical games
Region free. A game card bought in Japan, Europe or the Gulf plays on a console bought anywhere else. This is unchanged from the original Switch.
Digital games and the eShop
The store you see is tied to the country on your Nintendo Account, not to the console. That matters practically: Egypt has no dedicated eShop region, so most buyers here use an account set to another country and pay with credit for that region.
A console being region free is not the same as a console being new. Sellers sometimes answer this question instead of the one you asked.
